The Craft Cooperative will begin meeting Thursdays at 9:15AM in the Parent Lounge. It is a warm and inspiring group that gives parents the chance to learn something new; to experience an activity—a way of working with your hands—that our children will be experiencing themselves in the classroom; to contribute to the school; and eventually, to make projects of your own to keep.

Morning Events at New Amsterdam

All events will take place in the Parent Lounge.

Monday Morning 9:15 - 9: 45
PARENT EURYTHMY with Averi Lohss
Averi is a graduate of the Chicago Waldorf School, Lewis and Clark College with a degree in German, the Eurythmy Spring Valley four-year training, and the newest member of the Spring Valley Eurythmy Stage Group. She is also a development assistant at the Green Meadow Waldorf School, a German tutor and teaching Eurythmy at The New Amsterdam School.

Dear Parents of the New Amsterdam School,

Since my first encounter with Eurythmy as a first grader at the Chicago Waldorf School, I have found Eurythmy to be a marvelous healing art form, providing me the opportunity to gain self-knowledge and expand my abilities to think, move and feel.  The skills I am building are integral to working in the world today and I am grateful to be able to offer you the opportunity to join me for a weekly class at the school!

Averi Lohss

Wednesday Morning 9:15 - 10:30
PARENT STUDY with New Amsterdam Faculty Chair Lisa Bono and faculty mentor Louise DeForest

Our parent study is a place where parents can come together with faculty to explore the essentials of Waldorf Early Childhood Education through the reading and discussion of various books and articles.

Time is given for discussion sharing questions parents are carrying about anything really!

This time block will occasionally be used for watercolor painting with Brigitte Buss.  More to come.

Thursday Morning 9:15 - 11:15
CRAFTING

Open to anyone! See the Crafting Cooperative page for the latest news and updates.

**Please note: when entering the parent lounge please remove your shoes.  Thank you!

Volunteering at New Amsterdam

Thank you for taking the time to fill out our volunteer sign up form!  It amazes me how in each day our community is growing as is our need to work together.  Our social task as a community this year will unfold as we start to meet new faces and find the initiative living in each one of us.

In the next few weeks you will receive an email that will identify other members of the committee and who will be the liaison to the board (if need be), the faculty and the administration, identify some of the intentions and tasks of the group, and some next steps to how to continue conversation.

We look forward to generating more discussion around healthy social forms for community life.  Our first all school community meeting is Wednesday, October 3rd. In this meeting we will discuss the economic life of New Amsterdam, Waldorf Education, our future, and look more deeply into community life.

This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to learn more and have a voice in how we are visioning the future. Your presence is essential.

Please mark it on your calendar.

Blessings on our work together, and thank you for all that you do.

Lisa

A Word From the Craft Cooperative

Dear New Amsterdam Families,

I’d like to take a moment to introduce you to one of the many opportunities for parents to learn and grow and enrich one another’s lives (as well as those of the children) at our school: the Craft Cooperative. It is a warm and inspiring group that gives parents the chance to learn something new; to experience an activity—a way of working with your hands—that our children will be experiencing themselves in the classroom; to contribute to the school; and eventually, to make projects of your own to keep.

We will be meeting on Thursdays at 9:15 in the parent lounge. We will also meet on certain Wednesdays (tbd) after the parent study group.

All are welcome to attend!!

We aim to provide a platform for the community to share crafting ideas, projects, patterns, know-how and fix-its! We will hold introductory workshops in knitting, doll making, woodworking, fabric dyeing, felting, sewing, and painting. And we are open to suggestions!

The timeline is starting to take shape and it’s looking (roughly) like this:

The autumn months will be spent working on simple knitting, sewing, woodworking and doll making projects. The resulting items will be given to the school to be offered for sale in our holiday auction.

January thru mid February will be a time when crafters can work on their own projects. Many of us will try our hand at a large Waldorf doll or heavy baby. Others may wish to continue practicing knitting or sewing. Members of the cooperative will be on hand to help with projects, questions and experiments.

In the spring months we will need people to help make items for our spring fair. At this time we will hold workshops in needle felting and wet felting.

Next Thursday, September 20 will be our first meeting. We hope to see any and all of you there: newcomers to the art of crafting, experts and everyone in between. We will have yarn and knitting needles on hand and will be offering an introductory knitting tutorial: how to cast on, how to knit, how to purl (garter stitch and stockinette stitch). The resulting squares will transform before your eyes into beautiful auction items! As we will show you how to shape and stuff your knitted squares into beautiful knitted animal toys.

Hope to see you there! No project is too small! No hands are too clumsy!

Holy Mama -- Holy Papa

holy mama  -- holy papa:

a group to support, honor and inspire the inner life of mothers and fathers

What is wisdom? Wisdom is seeing the whole in the parts,
and in the whole seeing the holy.  – sufi teaching.

What is the sacred wisdom that being a mother/father offers us? What are the parts? --  the parts we can not see, the parts we do not want to see, and the parts that are strong and reflect our deepest essence. How do we develop the capacities to see and be our whole self, our HOLY self.

A holy mama/papa is a aware that parenting is an initiation into wholeness.  Meeting, accepting and learning to work with all the parts of our self we meet in being parents - we become healthy, whole, holy.

This group will meet bi-monthly on Wednesday mornings from 9am - 11am @ the New Amsterdam School. The fee for each group is $65 and a commitment for Oct - June is required.  There is scholarship available -- Please contact Jerilyn Brownstein directly to inquire about financial support for this program.

There will be a free group offered Oct 10th to get a better sense of the work and to ask questions. For further information about Jerilyn Brownstein MSW and her work supporting mothers/fathers/couples please feel free to wander through her web-site or contact her directly (sacredmama@aol.com).
