Volunteers Needed for Our Benefit Event

Dear New Amsterdam Families,

The members of the Seeds of Imagination benefit concert planning committee have been busy worker bees organizing, scheduling, designing, building, crafting, advertising and planning for the upcoming Benefit Concert on February 12th. And we would like to ask for your help!

On the day of the event, we could use some parent participation. So if you have some free time or can make some free time to help, we would be most appreciative!

Please email Lynne: lynne.t.wu@gmail.com or Kaarin: kaarinvon@gmail.com to volunteer!

Anyone who is free or able, please sign up for one of the following FIVE shifts:
(duties will be simple, concise and easy to follow!)

SHIFT 1. 9:30am- 12:00 Noon
Decorations, Patron Gift Bags, Last Minute Box Office
We will need help organizing, moving tables, setting up flowers and silks, posting signage, etc.

SHIFT 2. 1:30-4pm
Tech Run, Lobby set up
-We are hoping some teachers and speakers can be present at this time.
-Volunteers can assist with communications, continue to set up and continue box office duties

SHIFT 3. 4-6:30pm
Pre-event, Catering, Deliveries
-Help receive deliveries, set up reception area (beverage and food area, glasses, signage)

SHIFT 4.  6:30-10pm
The Event
-We can use a few people for welcoming, tickets, box office, manning tables, moving items

SHIFT 5. 10pm-midnight
Clean Up
- A MOST important aspect to this night will be to help us wrap it all up!! We can use a team of people to help return items to the school and to sponsors, and help return Henry Street Playhouse to its original condition!

Also, if you are not planning on using the complimentary ticket, please turn it in as soon as possible so we can get an accurate head count for the theater and hopefully sell it.

In addition, we welcome your assistance in spreading the word about the concert.  There is still time!  Please share the evite with your circles of friends, colleagues and families, and also feel free to post this information on any online groups or listserves you belong to.

Thank you all for your support and participation. We look forward to seeing you there!

Ms. Patricia's Garden Reflections

Our 3-Day Nursery children have finally made it to the garden! Speeding along in our new wagons, we make the trip in less than 5 minutes. Upon arrival, the children disembark, and then spread out over the meadow, like seeds blown in the wind! Some find a place to dig, others look for sticks, others gaze up in awe to see a kindergartner perched on a tree limb. Always, there are children romping and playing. What a beautiful sight this is! We are so grateful to visit the garden and have its essence sink deep into the beings of our young children.

Re-Enrollment Contracts Due February 8th

All currently enrolled families should have received their 2013-14 re-enrollment contracts by mail in the past week.  As we ask you to commit to another year of Waldorf education, we want to thank each and every family for being a part of our School community. We understand the sacrifices you make on behalf of your children and appreciate the many gifts that each family brings to our School community.

To ensure your child's place in the school for the 2013-14 school year you must return your signed contract and deposit check to the school on or before February 8th.  As we expect all our programs to be fully enrolled, please know that we cannot guarantee a place for your child if the contract is returned past this deadline.

I am happy to speak with you if you have any questions about this process or if you have not received your child's contract.

With warm wishes,

Karen Talluto

News from the Garden in Winter

Recent Garden Impressions:

The mere thought of playing in the garden these days has been motivation enough for the entire class to run (ok, more like trot) along the sidewalk as we approach the gate. “Gaarr-den, gaarrden, gaarden!”, the children chant and we take off, like a hive of bees, toward our destination. Once we get the lock open and the children’s mitten’s unencumbered by their loops, I set them free and at long-last these citified children go off to play in an exceptional natural environment. It is always in the garden when I think to myself: I can’t believe this is my job. What a life!

One seemingly sanguine little girl runs over to me and pulls my mittened hand to a corner of the garden where she’s spotted a cardinal looking for food near the pond. She overflows with excitement and wonder, and it is in this moment that I truly understand the notion of reverence. She tells me that cardinals do not fly away to somewhere warm in winter, and once again I find myself learning from the youngest teachers I’ve ever known. The next day, a little boy begs me to take him to the turtle pond to see the ice. To these winter-deprived children the site of ice seems to be the most mystifying thing. “ICE! ICE!!!”, they shout out on our walk. “Look, there’s a cup frozen in there!!” one boy exclaims. It takes me a moment to calibrate my amazement; even in the thoughtless discarding of another’s garbage, the children can experience the majesty of the natural laws of the universe. Now, on to figure out how goldfish survive under the ice...
